This statistical research project was completed as part of my coursework for a statistical analysis class at California State University, Monterey Bay. For this project, I examined whether pet ownership was associated with higher GPAs among upper division CSUMB students living in Promontory housing. My groupmate and I designed and distributed a survey, developed a randomized sampling strategy, and collected data from 75 student participants. The study focused on three variables: GPA, pet ownership status, and age, with the goal of exploring potential relationships between lifestyle factors and academic performance.
As the project's lead statistical analyst and presentation designer, I conducted quantitative analysis in JMP, created visualizations for numerical variables, interpreted results, and designed the final presentation. The analysis found that students with pets reported a slightly higher average GPA than students without pets; however, hypothesis testing showed that the difference was not statistically significant. The project strengthened my skills in survey design, data collection, statistical inference, data visualization, and communicating analytical findings to a non-technical audience.
